Newton’s Laws with Friction

This is the fourth of eight pre-class exercises, using DIYModeling, used in the first semester physics course at the United States Air Force Academy. Students analyze simulated scenarios and answer questions before coming to the lab class. In class they discuss their pre-class work and proceed to the hands-on real world version of the experiment.

In this scenario, two masses on two inclined planes are joined with a massless string. There is friction on one of the inclined planes while the other is frictionless. Using Newton’s laws students predict and analyze the motion of the system.
